From Wave Echo Cave to the Sunless Citadel, some of the most iconic adventures in D&D history start in the dark. Caves and sewers are two of the most reliable locations in any GM’s toolkit—one for when the party needs to venture into the wilderness unknown, and one for when the adventure is hiding just beneath the city streets. Both are full of cramped corners that make combat difficult, terrifying creatures adapted to the dark, and absolutely awful smells.
Whatever gets your party underground, the right battlemap instantly sets the mood and tone for your adventure. Here are our favorite cave and sewer battlemaps for D&D, each with three plot hooks to help kick off your next subterranean adventure.
✨ Every map on this list comes with a natural/empty variant if you’d rather stock your own encounters—as well as a pre-filled version for if you need something ready to drop into your campaign!
1. Secret Cave Hideout - Original Day

Tucked into a jagged cliffside, this sprawling Secret Cave Hideout hides an entire settlement, from a tavern and sleeping areas to shadowy backrooms. It’s atmospheric and versatile enough to fit almost any campaign, whether you need a rebel stronghold, a smuggler’s den, or a hidden pirate sanctuary that’s been off the map for centuries.
The natural variant of the map strips out all the infrastructure and works just as well as a raw cave encounter—perfect if you want to seed the settlement details yourself and fill it with a variety of monstrous encounters.
Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 The party has been hired to infiltrate the hideout—but the rebels inside aren’t as villainous as they were made out to be.
🔖 Supplies have stopped flowing from the hideout to a nearby settlement. The party sent to investigate finds the forges cold, the tavern silent, and doors barred from the inside.
🔖 Someone has been using the hideout’s forges to produce something. The finished goods are gone, but the molds left behind suggest something far more dangerous than just weapons.
2. Orc Desert Camp - Cave

Tattered banners, cracked bones, and spikes announce this Orc Desert Camp loud and clear before the party can even get close. Inside, command tents and war beast pens fill the cavern, and the whole map radiates an organized aggression that suggests whoever is in charge here is very good at their job.
Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 The party has been tasked with sabotaging the camp: burn the tents, release the mounts, and escape in one piece.
🔖 The orcs have offered a ceasefire and requested a meeting inside the cave. The party must serve as neutral envoys—but once inside, they’re caught between rival warlords vying for control of the camp.
🔖 A captured scout is scheduled for execution at dawn. The party has until sunrise to clear the camp out—or sneak in.
3. Geothermal Rift - Underdark Entrance

Tiered ledges spiral down into a glowing, luminescent chasm lined with crystals and strange moss—this Geothermal Rift looks exactly like somewhere you absolutely should not go, which means your players will be over the first ledge before you finish describing the map. This map is a perfect entrance to the Underdark or a signal of the danger below. Better hope the wizard prepared Feather Fall!
Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 The myconid colony that usually trades herbs and plants with the surface has gone completely silent. The party is sent to descend into the Underdark and find out why—great fit alongside Dragons of Stormwreck Isles.
🔖 A map to a long-lost dwarven vault leads directly into the rift…The only problem is that it passes through a known mindflayer territory.
🔖 A pulse of energy erupted from the rift last night, and nearby wildlife is starting to change in unforeseen ways. The party is sent to find out what’s waking up below.
4. Crumbling Platform Boss Fight - Original Day

A massive cavern full of precarious stone outcrops, ramshackle camps, and— wait, is that a crack in the floor? This Crumbling Platform Boss Fight is tailor-built for high-stakes showdowns, with ten distinct stages as the platforms begin to collapse one by one, forcing the player onto smaller and smaller footholds until they’re fighting on the last crumbling platform. A great, mechanically exciting map for a cinematic boss fight!
Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 The enemy lures the party here for a last stand, ready to die and take everyone else down with them.
🔖 A powerful artifact or enemy at the center is triggering the collapse—and the party must reach it before they all fall into the void.
🔖 A rival party or faction is also in the cavern—do the players fight for sole control of the center, or team up to survive?
5. Badger Hill Underground - Original

A quiet hilltop and a little cottage—nothing suspicious here! But beneath it, the Badger Hill Underground is a winding warren of storerooms, cellars, and living quarters dug deep into the earth.
Whether these warrens are the lair of some underground criminal organization or a halfling’s ambitious landscaping project, it’s cozy enough to feel lived-in but layered enough to host a thorough search if needed.
Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 The windmill is a front—something’s being moved in and out of the tunnels at night.
🔖 A reclusive, grumpy inventor lives beneath the hill, and the party needs something only they can build.
🔖 A smuggler’s stash hidden in the cellars contains a cursed item that’s now affecting the denizens living above the hill.
6. Beetle Tribe Canyon - Original Day

Warm sunlight, cozy sleeping quarters, and tiny tents give this Beetle Tribe Canyon a real sense of community—this is somewhere that has been home for a long time, and it shows. Whether it’s an insect-riding tribe or a fully insectoid settlement, the whimsical lived-in details are sure to make this map a party favorite the moment they arrive.
Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 The party’s been shrunk by fey magic and this beetle-riding village is their best shot at survival.
🔖 The tribe seeks help: their beetles have been getting sick, with no cure in sight.
🔖 An enemy warband is closing in, and the tribe asks the party to help defend the canyon—on beetleback!
7. Ancient Tech Treasury - Original Day

Excavation camps, a shattered vault door, and scattered notes suggest a race to uncover something lost to time in this humming cavern. Beyond the breach lies a trove of ornate, arcane technology that no one has claimed yet… and perhaps there’s a reason for that.
This Arcane Tech Treasury tells the story of a dig that ended suddenly, and leaves plenty of questions about what happened to the people who got here first. It’s a strong fit for any magitech campaign or a lost-civilization setting.
Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 The vault’s construct guardian golem is still operational—and the party is decidedly not what it considers “authorized personnel”.
🔖 Competing researchers from three different factions have arrived simultaneously. Each one offers the party coin for helping them get to the relic first—but will they need to work together when something ancient begins to shift?
🔖 The technology is emitting powerful planar energy, and it’s opening rifts to the Astral Plane. Every few rounds, random environmental effects or planar monsters appear.
8. Mushroom Infested Mines - Original

Minecart tracks, tight stone tunnels, and then— a cavern full of enormous, gorgeous, glowing mushrooms. These Mushroom Infested Mines are a map that’s sure to stop players in their tracks, from its bioluminescent blooms in every shade of vivid color to the promise of a deeper world below.
It’s eerie and beautiful in equal measure, and works brilliantly for anything from a haunted mining expedition that dug too deep, to a thriving underground ecosystem that the party stumbles into during their explorations.
Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 Miners tried burning back the fungi and angered something deep below. Now fungal tendrils are dragging away anything warm-blooded that moves.
🔖 A spore cloud causes shared hallucinations. The entire party begins experiencing the visions of different realities unfolding around them.
🔖 An entire underground fungal village exists here: comprised of myconid farmers, sporelings, and lots of floating lights. The party stumbles into an unexpectedly wholesome underworld.
9. Harpy Cove - Underdark

A shimmering underground lake lit by bioluminescent algae, ringed with empty nests and the wreckage of something that didn’t make it—this Harpy Cove map is hauntingly beautiful and unsettling in equal measure.
It’s a natural fit for any Underdark campaign, particularly the Darklake chapter of Out of the Abyss, and the animated version brings the dark waters to life stunningly.

Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 A kuo-toa settlement downstream has begun worshipping whatever lives in the lake. They’ve been leaving live offerings and the thing in the water has started leaving things in return.
🔖 The harpies are nesting near a sacred spring, and their presence is slowly corrupting its healing waters. A nearby village asks the party to clear them out, but the harpies claim they were here first. Who will the party side with?
🔖 The party hears singing, but after clearing the nests, they realize it’s coming from below the water. Something far older and mysterious than harpies is calling from the deep.
10. Cavern of the Venom Queen — Original

The Cavern of the Venom Queen starts innocuously enough—sewer tunnels that lead into storerooms and the remains of what looks like a functional settlement. It’s only as the party moves deeper that things begin to shift, starting with loose webs—as anyone would expect in an abandoned underground space.
But the webs keep getting thicker, and the innermost cavern makes it very clear that whatever has been living here since the settlers left has made thorough use of the space.
Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 The settlement didn’t empty out—the people are still here, cocooned in the cavern. Some of them are still alive, and the party must try to get them out before the Queen notices.
🔖 The Queen isn’t unreasonable, and she’ll let the party pass through if they leave something important behind.
🔖 A scholar has been studying the venom’s properties and believes it has significant medicinal applications. They want the party to fetch a fresh sample.
11. Sewer Tunnels — Original Day

No city campaign is complete without a trip into the sewers, and this Sewer Tunnels map makes that trip worth the smell. Rickety docks and makeshift tents form a ramshackle settlement above green water where the underground tunnels open into something larger.
This map is a natural fit for any urban campaign that needs a criminal underworld to add a little more excitement.
Hooks & Ideas:
🔖 The city’s water supply runs through these tunnels. Something has contaminated it, and people have begun acting more and more strangely.
🔖 A criminal organization has been using the sewer network as a base of operations for years. The party has been hired to clear them out, but once inside, it becomes apparent that the organization has been keeping something far worse contained beneath the streets.
🔖 A child went missing three days ago, with their last known sighting near a sewer grate. Tiny footprints go in—and trailing behind them is a second set that doesn’t look like anything recognizable from a bestiary.
