Running a good devil encounter means thinking far beyond the battlefield. Every devil in the Nine Hells follows a rigid chain of command, and most know how to use negotiation as well as a blade. Each rank has its own distinct look and presence, and giving your players a strong first look at their adversary is half the battle in making an encounter stick.
Below, you’ll find tokens we’ve created that represent the full hierarchy of devils, from the lowest lemure to Hell’s own generals, each one ready to customize in our token builder. We’ve also paired each devil with a map recommendation, so you can drop it straight into its home turf.
1. Lemure

A lemure is the lowest rank of devil in Hell. Shapeless and miserable, it’s what’s left of a damned soul once the Hells have worn away everything that once made it a person—and doomed to stay this way until something further up the chain decides that it’s worth promoting into an imp. Great as expendable devil-horde filler, a lemure’s entire purpose is to be marshaled in droves and thrown at whatever needs softening up.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stage a lemure encounter, the hell variant of this Celestial Gate works great. Wherever devils are spilling through in hordes, lemures won’t be far behind.
2. Imp

An imp is small, cunning, and best suited for subtlety rather than an all-out fight. It can shift into an unassuming small animal whenever it needs to slip past unnoticed, or turn invisible on top of that, making it one of Hell’s best surveillance tools. Many end up bound to a warlock as a familiar, whispering advice that always serves its—or its superior’s—interest first.
Alternatively, we also have a giant imp token variant to turn the concept of an imp on its head. Use this token after you've lulled your players into thinking imps aren't a threat. Or perhaps this imp is soon to be promoted.

If you’re looking for somewhere to run an imp encounter, this Demonic Library map is a great fit—anywhere with shelves to hide behind and secrets worth stealing is exactly where an imp wants to be.
3. Bearded Devil (Barbazu)

A bearded devil is a foot soldier through and through, thrown to the front lines shoulder-to-shoulder with the rest of Hell’s forces and left there to slug it out. It fights with a glaive in one hand and a writhing beard as a second weapon, with wounds inflicted by either one resisting healing. This caste of devil is rarely made up of schemers or commanders—just soldiers built to hit hard and keep hitting.
That said, we’ve also got a tax collector variant of this token in our token builder, for a devil that might have traded their glaive for a quill and ledger.

If you’re running the tax collector version of this devil, this Hell’s Tax Office gives your bureaucrat a proper stage. For the standard barbazu, however, the fiery variant of this Ancient Battlefield map might fit better, with its scorched and open ground perfect for the kind of fight it wants.
4. Barbed Devil (Hamatula)

A barbed devil is a guard of Hell—and a possessive one at that. It stands watch over vaults, treasuries, and whatever else Hell’s higher-ranking devils don’t want touched. Underneath the duty, though, it’s often greedy, always watching for something worth claiming as its own.

The hell variant of this Wizard Vault map is a fitting home for such a possessive creature. Whatever’s locked inside the vault’s massive mechanisms, a barbed devil certainly won’t share.
5. Chain Devil (Kyton)

Wrapped head to foot in animated chains that lash, bind, and crush at its command, a chain devil is Hell’s jailer and torturer. Some take the cruelty further still, twisting their faces into the likeness of a victim’s dead loved ones to shake their resolve before the real torment begins.

If you’re staging a chain devil encounter, the Hellfire Prison is a fitting stage—a place built for the damned to suffer, with a jailer only too happy to oblige.
6. Bone Devil (Osyluth)

The enforcers and interrogators of the Nine Hells, a bone devil is sent wherever discipline has slipped, or a contract’s terms need collecting on. Its job is to watch every other devil in Hell and report the ones who step out of line—a task it carries out with great relish.

If you’re looking for a place where the osyluth’s authority can really shine, the hell variant of this Court of Justice map sets the scene perfectly for the passing of judgment.
7. Erinyes

Each erinyes was once an angel, before some transgression or temptation turned it toward Hell instead. It fights with a poisoned blade and a soldier’s discipline, rather than a devil’s chaos, and is often more executioner than schemer. Even now, it carries a shadow of what it once was, with feathered wings that once belonged to grace.

The hell variant of this Gate of Angels map puts the erinyes right where they belong: a threshold between Celestia and Hell, toeing the line between what it once was and what it is now.
8. Ice Devil (Gelugon)

Where most of Hell’s commanders are content to direct a battle from a safe distance, an ice devil leads its legions while fighting alongside them, unwilling to trust a victory it hasn’t earned. Its contempt for weakness burns as cold as the frost dripping from its claws, and lesser devils who falter in its presence rarely get a second chance.

If you’re looking for somewhere to run an ice devil encounter, the dark frost variant of this Nightmare Dragon Lair provides a frozen stronghold worthy of the legions it leads.
9. Pit Fiend

A pit fiend is where Hell’s hierarchy tops out, just below the archdevils themselves. It commands legions in the wars against demons and celestials alike, but its ambitions rarely stop at the battlefield. Many spend centuries maneuvering Hell’s politics with the same ruthlessness they bring to a fight, hunting for the sort of power that outlasts a war.

Few maps do justice to a pit fiend’s presence quite like the infernal variant of this Dwarven Throne Hall, a throne room worthy of something that stands so close to the top of the Nine Hells.
10. Succubus / Incubus

By the books, a succubus or incubus isn’t technically a devil, since its true nature is a shape-changing fiend. But few creatures embody the manipulative side of Hell’s reputation better, and it’s earned a permanent place in the public imagination as a devil. This fiend rarely needs force to get what it wants: a single charmed glance is enough to bind a victim to its will, obedient to every command until something breaks the spell.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stage a succubus or incubus encounter, the Hell’s Cocktail Lounge is tailor-made for its brand of temptation. Somewhere that looks like a good time is exactly where this fiend does its best work, after all.
