1. Desert Caravanserai

Kicking off our list is the vibrant Desert Caravanserai map—the picturesque pinnacle of what one might imagine when thinking of a desert oasis town.
A walled little town brimming with life and color amidst the arid landscape, the town is adorned with vividly colored tent tops and merchants, a charming little fountain at its heart, and an atmosphere both cozy and majestic. Fortified walls, turrets, and giant golden statues guard the entrance and hint that there is more to the wealth and power of its inhabitants than meets the eye.
This map is perfect for introducing a bustling central hub of activity and intrigue in your desert campaign. It can serve as a lively marketplace where adventurers can rest and resupply, but also a backdrop for sociopolitical alliances. The map also comes with twenty variants, including scenarios like “Toxic River” and “Sandstorm” where the lively facade of the caravanserai dulls in the wake of looming threats, and it’s up to your players to restore the beautiful town to its former glory.
💡 Stepping into the caravanserai, you’re greeted by an explosion of color and sound. The marketplace is alive with the shouts of merchants, music, laughter and chatter; and the the air is rich with the smell of fresh bread, roasting meats and an array of exotic spices, drawing you into the vibrant heart of this oasis.
Suggested Encounters
- Lotus Bazaar Night Heist: Under the cover of night, the party is tasked with infiltrating the bazaar to steal a rare and powerful item from a heavily guarded storeroom. The party will need to put their stealth, cunning, and combat skills to succeed without getting caught—navigating alleyways and magical wards, avoiding patrols, and bribing or deceiving guards. Suggested map variation: Lotus Bazaar Night
- Through The Sandstorm: The caravanserai has suddenly been engulfed by a massive sandstorm, plunging the town into a chaos of blinding sand, flying debris, and suffocating conditions. To make matters worse, dangerous creatures like elementals and beasts might be emerging from the storm. The party must navigate these hazards to rescue trapped residents, repair damaged structures, and defend the walled city from monsters. Suggested map variation: Sandstorm
- Something in the Water: The once-pure waters that run through this oasis have turned toxic, causing any creature that drinks them to fall severely ill. The party will need to investigate the contamination and uncover the cause: whether it’s the result of sabotage, natural causes, or a magical curse. They may also need to find a cure by working with local healers and scholars, or secure an alternative water supply to prevent a recurrence of this disaster. Suggested map variation: Toxic River
2. Tomb of Sand

Ready for a change in scenery? Let’s leave behind the bustling bazaar and dive into halls of ancient grandeur with this mysterious Tomb of Sand—a magnificent two-part map that perfectly captures the mystery of a desert temple lost to time.
The exterior version of the map depicts a stunning temple adorned with beautiful domed turquoise qubba and weathered sandstone walls etched with murals. A stone bridge spans the vast expanse of sand to lead to the imposing entrance of the grand structure.
Inside, the Tomb of Sand turns into a dungeon designed with rooms for ancient guardians, complex puzzles, and deadly traps to protect the treasures and secrets hidden within. At the end of the labyrinthine interior is a grand boss room, dominated by a colossal hourglass filled with sand—the perfect element for a dramatic boss encounter.

💡 Golden dunes stretch endlessly before you, the shimmering heat creating mirages that seem to dance on the horizon. The deep turquoise domes of the temple rise through the sands, catching the golden light of the sun.
Suggested Encounters
- Stone Sentinels: As the party approaches the temple’s entrance, ancient stone guardians at the entrance awaken and attack. Your players will need to engage in combat against these overpowered protectors while deciphering runes on the pillars that hint towards the creatures’ weaknesses.
- Curse of the Tomb: Inside the temple, the party might encounter a group of former tomb robbers who have been cursed by the tomb’s ancient magic—perhaps foreshadowing for your players’ fates if they don’t navigate the dungeon carefully. Whether the tomb robbers have been turned undead or into monstrosities, they’ll attack anyone who enters. If the players manage to lift their curse, they might gain a group of unlikely allies or valuable information.
- Hourglass of Fate: In the final chamber, your party will come across a colossal hourglass leaking sand. Manipulating the hourglass might alter time in the tomb, slowing or speeding up events. Players will need to use the hourglass to their advantage in a climactic battle against the boss of the dungeon, using time shifts to avoid attacks and strategize.
3. Trainwreck Village

Let’s leave behind the ancient secrets of the sands to visit something a little smaller—but incredibly unique. This Trainwreck Village map depicts a gritty survival scenario in which the remnants of a train wreck have been transformed into a makeshift settlement.
Nestled at the bottom of steep sandstone cliffs in a mountainous desert region, a train lies wrecked at the bottom of a ravine, its cars repurposed into shelters and defensive structures. Around and within the wreckage, small camps, tents, and huts have been set up by survivors or refugees desperate for respite.
This desert village is perfect for survival, rescue, or defense situations, capable of serving as a temporary refuge for weary travelers, a base of operations for exploring the surrounding desert, or even a permanent hub for a community of NPCs or factions. Players might be tasked with rescuing villagers, gathering resources, or defending the settlement from monsters.
💡 The sight of the trainwreck comes into view—a once-mighty vehicle reduced to a skeleton of steel and iron. The wreckage has been cobbled together to for a makeshift village, with tents and huts scattered around the train cars. The air is thick with dust, and the sound of hammering and voices fill the air as survivors work desperately to fortify their new home. The steep sandstone cliffs loom overhead, casting long shadows as the sun begins to set—heralding the threat of the desert night.
Suggested Encounters
- Essential Supplies: The villagers residing in the village are beginning to run low on essential supplies, such as building materials, food, and—most importantly of all in the sweltering desert heat—water. The party must venture out into the desert to gather these things, facing environmental hazards and hostile creatures along the way.
- Monster Assault: The trainwreck lies deep in monster territory, and there are signs that a raid or attack from a pack of them is imminent. The party must help the villagers prepare for the attack by setting traps, training survivors in combat, or leading a defensive strike against the assault.
- Mystery of the Wreck: The cause of the trainwreck itself is still unknown, and all the signs are suggesting that it wasn’t an accident. The party must investigate the wreckage, uncover clues, and solve the mystery—all while the saboteur is still on the loose, or perhaps even hiding among the survivors.
4. Village Hunting Guild - Desert

While the “Trainwreck Village” has got the gritty wilderness covered, the desert variant of this Village Hunting Guild map is a bustling, well-organized hub of activity and camaraderie.
This map showcases a large and intricate guildhall dedicated to the art of hunting. Complete with a vast courtyard with training grounds and a well-stocked armory, the guild also boasts a map room for planning expeditions and a job board teeming with quests and bounties. A central taproom also offers adventurers a cozy space to relax, network, and share stories.
The Village Hunting Guild is perfect for placing in a hub town or city, serving as a central point for players to gather resources, find new quests, and interact with other hunters and adventurers—whether your party is looking to take on new marks, upgrade their gear, sell monster parts, or unwind after a long adventure.
💡 As you step into the courtyard, you’re greeted by the sounds of steel clashing. The armory glistens with rows of polished weapons; filled with the earthy scent of leather and the metallic tang of weaponry. A grand job board stands, covered in posters offering bounties and quests—while the maproom’s walls are adorned with charts and plans for future hunts. The taproom buzzes with laughter and conversation, almost seeming to wash your weariness away.
Suggested Encounters
- Monster Hunt: The party picks up a high-stakes contract from the job board, tasking them with hunting a particularly dangerous desert creature. They’ll first have to gather information from guild members who have already encountered the beast, then prepare themselves with specialized gear, weapons, and potions—before tracking the creature down deep in the desert and confronting it in a thrilling battle.
- Training Day: The guildmaster invites the party to participate in—or, given sufficient reputation, host—a series of training exercises designed to test their combat skills, teamwork, and strategy. These challenges might include mock battles against creatures, obstacle courses and simulated desert hazards, and tactical drills that require team coordination. Successfully executing these exercises might earn the party recognition within the guild and access to rare resources.
- Desert Expedition: The guild is planning a major expedition into an unexplored part of the desert. The party is invited to join them, giving you the opportunity to seed unique discoveries and adventures, and to uncover the story hooks to ancient secrets or treasures. The party will need to plan the expedition, survive the harsh weather conditions, and deal with any unexpected monster attacks along the way.
5. Fallen Ancient Tree

If a world tree falls in the middle of the desert, does it make a sound? This Fallen Ancient Tree map depicts a massive, ancient tree that has long collapsed, immortalizing a stunning landmark amidst the vast desert sands. The gnarled giant, dry and desiccated, has been colonized by vibrant fungi and curious explorers alike.
This map is great for encounters involving discovery and NPC interaction. This fallen tree can serve as a waypoint during your party’s adventures, a hub for desert nomads, or even a hideout for mysterious creatures (especially if the Monster Hunter Guild from earlier made it into your campaign)!
💡 The sight of the ancient tree emerges on the horizon—a colossal, gnarled relic lying across the relentless sands. The immense trunk is a mosaic of desiccated bark and vibrant fungi—moss, shrubs and other hardy plants clinging to the weathered surface. Around the fallen behemoth, small camps of explorers buzz with activity, tents a patchwork of colors against the golden dunes.
Suggested Encounters
- Wild Encounter: The tree has a become habitat for a host of unique and dangerous desert creatures. While investigating the tree, the party may need to deal with nests of giant scorpions, territorial sand drakes, or other predators—testing their knowledge of the desert and their combat skills.
- Restoration Ritual: A druid NPC believes that the tree can be partially revived through a ritual, and has hired the party to help them do so. The party will need to gather rare components from the surrounding desert and perform the ritual, protecting the druid from hostile creatures drawn to the magic.
- The World Tree: This tree is a remnant of an ancient world tree, wrought with ancient magic. The party discovered a portal within its roots that leads to another part of the Yggdrasil map series, opening the way to adventures in new realms.
